Course Aims & Objectives

Aims

The aim of the Graduate Diploma in Reproductive Sciences is to provide theoretical understanding and practical training in the applications of reproductive biology to clinical human and veterinary medicine. The social and ethical issues raised by the use of these techniques are covered in the course. For professionals currently working in this area, there is the opportunity for updating knowledge and skills.

Objectives

At the completion of the Graduate Diploma in Reproductive Sciences, students will be able to:

  • communicate an advanced theoretical knowledge and understanding of human and animal reproductive sciences;
  • critically evaluate recent developments in clinical human and animal reproductive sciences;
  • understand the ethical issues and implications of research in the reproductive sciences and population control;
  • demonstrate practical techniques currently in use in human medical and veterinary reproductive sciences.

Expected Vocational Outcome

The Graduate Diploma in Reproductive Sciences provides suitable training in a number of fields including:

  • assisted reproductive technologies (ART);
  • reproductive research programs;
  • basic laboratory activities;
  • animal breeding improvement programs.

Entrance Requirements

The Graduate Diploma in Reproductive Sciences is available to candidates with Bachelors degrees from approved tertiary institutions in the following areas:

  • Science with a major in any of the following areas: anatomy, biochemistry, biology, genetics, pharmacology, physiology, microbiology, immunology or zoology
  • Nursing
  • Medicine
  • Veterinary Science
  • or equivalent qualifications.

Course Duration

Full time 1 year. Part time 2 years.

GRS1002 Gonadal Development and Function
GRS1003 Pregnancy & Parturition
GRS1004 Reproductive Health
GRS1005 Fertility Regulation

Elective Units

GRS2001 Animal Sciences
GRS2002 Assisted Reproductive & Genetic Technologies
GRS2003 Reproductive Health Services & Policy

Assessment

Assessment is by journal review presentations, essays and examinations.

This course is based at the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development, Monash Medical Centre and participating departments at Monash University, Clayton.
