Your support does make a difference
The past twenty years have seen ground breaking advances in the research conducted at our Institute. Established in 1991 by Professors David de Kretser AC and Alan Trounson with just a small number of researchers, we have grown to be a world leading Institute with more than 300 scientists, students and staff.
Our researchers have made significant discoveries in the areas of fertility, preterm birth, inflammation and men’s and women’s health. Institute scientists have been among the world leaders in IVF and SIDS research.Their discoveries continue to shape the way we understand these health issues.
In more recent years, the Institute has expanded its work, making important advances in cancer, inflammation, infectious diseases and the application of stem cells to a wide range of diseases and conditions. These advances in our understanding of the causes and potential treatments of disease would not have been possible without financial support from government bodies, philanthropic trusts and individual donors.
This generous support enables us to continue to translate our discoveries in the laboratory into outcomes that directly benefit patients. Just some of the highlights over the past 20 years include:
- Identifying the main risk factors that can lead to babies dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
- Growing human prostate tissue in the laboratory as a tool for understanding and potentially treating prostate disease
- Identifying adult stem cells in the endometrium (uterus) that are helping researchers better understand endometriosis and endometrial cancer
- Discovering specific molecules that cause cancer of the breast, bladder and prostate to metastasise, or spread
- Discovering a protein within the human body that could be targeted to treat a range of
inflammatory diseases, including arthritis and chronic lung disease in premature babies
Our focus continues to be on developing further understanding of diseases to find better therapies for patients. We have established a Phase I Clinical Trials unit to accelerate our laboratory findings to clinical applications aimed at reducing suffering and improving quality of life.
I am proud of what we have achieved over the last twenty years, and feel privileged to be leading this Institute at such a significant time. My hope is that, over the next twenty years, MIMR will continue to expand its research capacity and maintain and expand its impact as a world leader in medical research.
Together we will drive advances in the areas of cancer, stem cells, inflammation, infectious diseases and men’s, women’s and children’s health.
Medical research requires time, money and dedication; we urgently need your support. A donation to our Institute is an investment in the future.
As a friend of the Institute, I urge you to consider making a special gift or regular pledge to help us celebrate our 20th Anniversary. Please phone us between 9am and 5pm on 1800 424 055 or download this donation form to make a gift.
Our scientists are passionate about finding results that will revolutionise research and benefit the whole community. With your generosity we can further our important work.
Yours Sincerly,
Professor Bryan Williams Institute Director
