Brief History:
When Cancer took the life of Ron Evans AM in 2007, the community lost a great businessman, talented administrator and philanthropist. As Managing Director of Spotless, he was part of one of Australia’s great business success stories. As Chairman of Essendon Football Club and later as AFL Chairman, he guided Australian Rules Football into the professional arena and consolidated its financial stability.
To honour Ron’s life, the Evans family decided to raise money for research into bowel cancer, through an annual golf day to support research at MIMR, to be known at the Ron Evans Golf Day.
For the past three years, the Ron Evans Golf Day has been enjoyed by all who participated and the financial result has enabled MIMR to create a scientific research fellowship in honour of Ron Evans AM, the Ron Evans Cancer Research Fellowship.
This Fellowship provides an opportunity for an early career scientist to conduct research into cancer. Dr Sameer Greenall, was appointed in 2008 as the Ron Evans Cancer Research Fellow. His research is focused on a protein linked to the development and progression of different cancers. He is hopeful that this research will identify new therapeutic targets for some forms of cancer.
