Dr Galina Polekhina

Dr Galina Polekhina commenced at Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) in  2009 as head of the Structural Biology laboratory and Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Cancer Research .

Dr. Polekhina brings with her the expertise in determining structures of many medically important proteins by using synchrotron radiation techniques.

Graduating from Moscow State University in 1989, Dr. Galina Polekhina began her career as a research assistant in the Protein Crystallography Laboratory at the Institute of Crystallography, Russian Academy of Science, Moscow.

In 1996 Dr Polekhina was awarded a Ph.D. from Aarhus University (Denmark) for her work on elongation factor Tu, one of the essential proteins involved in protein biosynthesis. Dr. Polekhina has produced revolutionary studies that highlight the importance of dynamics and conformational flexibility at the molecular level and introduced a new concept of molecular mimicry across protein-RNA border.

Dr Polekhina previously worked in the Structural Biology Laboratory at St. Vincents Institute as a postdoctoral scientist in 1997. In 2003 she was awarded a NHMRC R.D. Wright Career Development Award.
