Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) prides itself on offering a stimulating, nurturing environment for its students. As a dedicated research institute, MIMR can provide opportunities, such as one-on-one student to supervisor contact, not always found in university departments where staff members have heavy undergraduate teaching loads.
Our location at Monash Medical Centre offers unique opportunities for combining clinical and basic science research. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities accommodating sophisticated approaches to gene targeting, genomic, proteomic and high-content analysis of cell and animal biology. The most advanced stem cell technologies, embryo microinjection gene arrays, lasercapture micro-dissection, confocal microscopy and cell imaging ensure research is carried out using the latest cutting-edge equipment. In addition, clinical facilities include access to the largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Victoria and the only dedicated Paediatric Sleep Clinic in the state.
International placements and opportunities
MIMR encourages applications for research elective placements from international science and medical students. Many of the projects offered by centres can be modified for short research projects suitable for this. The MIMR human relations team is happy to assist with obtaining necessary visas for these placements. Students should view the projects listed and contact the supervisors well in advance as visas may take up to six months to obtain. MIMR also offers students exciting opportunities to present research findings at national and international scientific meetings.
Postgraduate Student Committee
The Postgraduate Student Committee provides support for all postgraduate students. Comprising of scientists and student representatives from each research centre, the committee aims to ensure each student is able to manage their workload, expectations, career development and any conflict issues that may arise. The committee coordinates higher degree confirmation, mid candidature reviews, pre-submission seminars and PhD scholarship applications. It also runs instructional sessions on time management, thesis writing and scholarship applications. Students are monitored annually and have the opportunity to present at MIMR’s annual student symposium.
Studying at MIMR is complemented by the activities of two enthusiastic social clubs. The MIMR Social Club and Postgraduate Social Club coordinate a wide range of events for staff and students to give everyone the opportunity to meet and socialise in a relaxed atmosphere. Activities include pub nights, trivia nights, themed lunches, ten pin bowling and the annual Christmas party.
