Dr Caroline Gargett: Ten of the best
Senior Scientist and Senior Research Fellow, Dr Caroline Gargett, has been recognised in the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Ten of the Best for 2007.
The annual Ten of the Best publication highlights outstanding medical researchers funded by the NHMRC. The awards are based on scientific reports prepared on the funded research. The awards aim to demonstrate that investment in health and medical research generates significant returns for Australia in terms of improved health outcomes for the population and more efficient and effective healthcare.
Dr Gargett's research into targeting stem cells to treat endometriosis has led to the identification and location of the two types of adult stem cells involved in the monthly regeneration of the endometrial lining of the uterus. Dr Gargett has also demonstrated that both types of cells are stimulated by estrogen. Her work may also benefit women suffering from a prolapsed pelvic floor, as the stem cells could be used to grow tissue to repair and support this group of muscles.
